 | 10:13 pm - You're so vain... you probably think this blog is about you!
In honor of my birthday, Neil Gaiman's Blog and I had dinner at Che Bradaki. Neil Gaiman's Blog was such a delightful conversationalist, but it would appear that Neil Gaiman's Blog doesn't find me in the least bit funny... but hey, I'm eating dinner with Neil Gaiman's Blog, so who cares, right? After a delicious meal, Neil Gaiman's Blog and I adjourned into the living room for a viewing of Mirror Mask. It was a little odd, watching the movie with Neil Gaiman's Blog, since it is Neil Gaiman's Blog's movie. The evening was over far too soon, and Neil Gaiman's Blog had to leave to do what Neil Gaiman's Blog does. I should stop, though, before it starts to look like I'm just name dropping Neil Gaiman's Blog. Peace!

 | 09:12 pm The joys of internet dating To a kind and lonely heart.
Hey, sexy, you want to ride me? You are everything I want...maybe.
Quickly, write me, I am begging. I, however, refuse to return the effort.
The first real life contact Was a married mafia man.
I happened to fall in love. How sweet the words he wove.
So many lies...where was fact? After sex how quickly he ran.
I unconsciously made him pay. Guilt and care consumed him.
Now he has vanished. Why is my heart still vanquished?
Then the next guy had a way Of making me feel like spam.
I was everything he prized. Right up until he learned my size.
Now I often chat with a broken divorcer Who expresses concern about my weight.
Will he still be my good friend After he sees me end to end?
Men have very little luster For females who do not stimulate.
The second real life encounter May not amount to much.
In email, I asked him after a date What was last name was outright.
He ignored my pointer. He made no mention of such.
Seems to me he will disappear. At least to me he is not dear.
Now two more men have arrived To ask me to be open and alive.
I begin to have frustration Being an open book to blind men.

 | 02:20 pm - Words of wisdom "If there is something you are procrastinating on, writing a book, making a movie or asking a girl out. Do it. Today. Be scared, be stupid but there is one thing you are not allowed to do: Give up.
Empty your head. Empty it of all the ideas, stories, jokes, philosophies and inventions. Put it down on paper and share it. We are on this planet for such a short time; don't hog the magic by dying with it all in your head. Make your life extrordinary."
~ Rob Schrab, foreword to Scud #21 (the first returning issue of 2008)
Rob just proved again to me what a great guy he is in another email. I'll keep a lid on the details of why, you'll find out in the weeks to come.
Damn, the Omnibus is heavy! As soon as I get spare time again, I'll start reading it. As I said last night, I have a video to make, an album to finish, and more to do between now and August 13th.

 | 02:06 pm - Tasty Chicken in Plymouth Today is new Mattress day. I have needed a new mattress for a couple years and, with patient help from flinx I actually went shopping (I hate shopping) and picked one. It was delivered this morning.
How is this related to chicken? Well, US Mattress in Plymouth is right next to Lee's famous recipe Chicken, on the North side of Ann Arbor rd in Plymouth between Sheldon and Main. We stopped there for a snack of chicken strips and it was really really nummy. I am a huge fan of fried chicken and this was the best chicken I've had in a long time. Honey-dipped and moist.
So if you live near there, check them out. Big yellow sign. Lee's. Chicken. Yum.

Especially when there are hot women around, that is. ;)
I'm glad to know you, and still hold out hopes of biking together sometime. No really. No double-entendres or anything. Oh, Stop. You people are sick!
Happy Birthday!

 | 10:25 am - Penguicon pictures from the past
Anne looming over Neil Originally uploaded by netmouse.
Yesterday I went looking for a document from before I got this computer and went into a whirl of looking through old files and deleting and moving them around, merging files from this computer, my old work laptop, and the computer I had before that, as well as CDs of backups from years past.
One of the things I came upon was this picture Jeff took of me and Neil Gaiman at Penguicon 2.0. It was in with my files on that year's Penguicon instead of being with my pictures from it (which were in my netmouse.com folder and not in with the rest of my pictures, anyway), so I hadn't seen it in a while. The rest of my pictures from that year I have previously only shared with a few friends, partly because there are pictures of me in a bikini and I used to feel more negatively about my weight and form at the time than I do now. Now you all get to see them.
Other people featured in the set from Penguicon 2.0 include Pete Abrams and his then-assistant Trillian, Neil's son Mike, Chuck, Rennie, and the rest of the gang who joined us for a pool party that Saturday night, followed by a "massage Trillian" party that was even more fun.
The set includes two of my favorite pictures that I've ever taken, this picture of Chuck and Rennie curled up together at the party and this one of Neil at breakfast on Monday, finally looking rested and ready for his drive back home (he drove here in the Mini Cooper that spring, partly I think to show it to Mike). During the time that Chuck and Rennie were together it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling to have given them an image of their closeness that they both liked. Even though they're no longer together, I hope they still like the picture; I certainly do. I also found it a powerful example of the way the noflash version of a picture can be so much better than the same picture with the flash on.

 | 12:22 am - A solid gold bomb just dropped on the FuMP...

"Scud" The newest song from the great Luke Ski, Download the free MP3 now at the Funny Music Project, http://www.theFuMP.com This is a song about what is in my opinion, the greatest comic book ever, "Scud The Disposable Assassin", created by Rob Schrab. Rob and I used to take improv classes together in Milwaukee. Rob is one of the original members of "The Dead Alewives", giving him the distinct infamy of being 'the Mountain Dew guy' in the world renowned "Dungeons & Dragons" sketch. During Scud's original mid-90's run, he moved to L.A., where his growing Hollywood workload made him decide to stop "Scud" at issue #20 with an armageddon-implying cliffhanger. Rob went on with his comedy partners to create such cool things as the pilot "Heat Vision And Jack" which starred Jack Black and was directed by Ben Stiller, "Robot Bastard", "Channel 101", "Acceptable TV", "Monster House", "The Hell O'clock News" for Tenacious D, he directed a video for Death Cab for Cutie, and he is the co-creator and director of "The Sarah Silverman Program". A decade later, Rob felt it was finally time to finish what he'd started, and created issues 21 through 24 of "Scud", which at long last finishes the story. Image Comics released them over the summer, and today released "Scud The Disposable Assassin: the Whole Shebang", an 786 page Omnibus containing all 24 issues, available at your local comic shop now. Rob also announced a Scud fan film contest at his website, RobSchrab.com, and has already gotten some great entries. I have been wanting to do a song about "Scud" ever since I started making music in '94. The song's time has finally come. Many of my fans have told me that they would have never seen a movie or started watching a TV show if I hadn't done a song about it that peaked their interest in it. My "Scud" song is my ultimate expression of attempting to achieve that desired effect. The comic book "Scud" is the coolest thing in my life that most other people don't know about. So as well as paying tribute to something that has meant so much to me over the past 14 years, I hope you'll go pick up a copy of the Omnibus and get sucked into the world of "Scud". And FYI, I am going to attempt to make a music video for this song before the end of the month for the Scud fan film contest. The opening and closing music for the song is by Chris Mezzolesta of Power Salad, with vocals by Chris and Carrie Dahlby. What else left is there to say about it, other than... ...It's cool to be a robot. ~ Luke Ski, July 22nd, 2008

 | 04:03 pm - Oh, The Updates! Well, it's been 5 days since I've posted an update of any substance (and I think I'll let lie, right here, the debate a to whether or not anything I've ever posted is truly of any substance), and as is wont to happen, my lack of updating is due to an abundance of things to write and update about, rather than the converse. What does that mean to you? Another long, boring, catch up post!! Yay for you. ( Tales of acting, moving, daring, and bats to follow... ) Current Mood: enthralled

 | 01:51 pm In this post, I will make another feeble attempt to think like a businessperson. Well, perhaps not quite. Business plans are stereotypically concerned with starting a company, hiring employees, changing the world, and becoming rich. This plan concerns merely generating enough supplementary income to live on. I have realized that life itself requires a business plan, so that counts.
As I have been mentioning to anyone who will listen, I am inspired to earn income by having customers and tip-donors rather than offer a service to clients. My long-term goal is to reach a place where I earn $2,000 a month by going directly to users of my creations, without having to work for a BigCo or a client.
As Escape Artists has a cozy team of about half a dozen, and all our listeners are consuming something that I absolutely love, I consider that part of this plan. I consider a successful webcomic artist or internet musician to be another type of person who lives this way.
My latest scheme is to make games and sell them on my website. What prompted all of this was finding out how easy and inexpensive ceramic is. It also plays to my strengths, both as someone who likes building things with his hands, and using art software. Custom cookie cutters, and rubber stamps based on my own vector illustrations, will make easy and fast replicas. I just press the stamp into a sheet of clay, for an entire game; then cut out the tiles with my custom cookie cutters, which I've already made. The first set is drying now.
I'm used to game designers telling me that the only way to make and sell games is a massive outlay of capital, based on a small business loan, to get a production run of plastic parts in China. What little credit I have is mildly poor, so I used to feel game entrepreneurship was beyond me. It turns out the cost of a 7"x9" rubber stamp made from my vector art is only $35. I'd only ever have to sell one copy to make back the money to start the product line. I'd lose on the cost of my own labor if I only sell one copy, but it's the way I would want to spend time anyway. In the worst-case scenario, I've made beautiful things that previously only existed on paper. I don't see a downside.
I think many of my products will involve Japanese, since I have familiarity with that, and I know people who can help me get in touch with lots of students who might like to buy beautifully-made learning games.

 | 01:27 pm - Bat Break
So just a quick update here on the happenings here at the Studio. Woot, with a picture of a Bat pendant that I made last year. Yeah it was a one of a kind and sold it long ago, probably around Halloween. I think it's cute, I always meant to make more. Maybe someday I will. I am showing it as an ode to the Dark Knight movie I saw yesterday. It was lots of fun to go to the movies with friends, I cannot remember the last time I saw a movie at the theatre. Might have been Harry Potter. Yeah. I need to get out more! And so I am! Thus my lack of blog activity lately. Just taking a little break. And my camera is not co-operating so I don't have pretty new things to show. I am keeping very busy around the studio, and working to balance family and friend time with work a little better than I have in past months. Having a lot of summer fun. In fact, I am taking the rest of the week off! I will be spending a few days on the other side of the state meeting a beady friend that I have known for years but have never met in real life! That is exciting, I hope to share many creative ideas with her! So I wish you happy and warm summer days, and I will see you again soon when I have some new work to show and fresh ideas to share.

 | 12:36 pm - Breaking News I've just been informed, I am now a Yahoo Groups Power User.
I feel so... powerful. :P
Saw the Dark Knight last night and agree with the Ferrett that while it is probably not the best movie of all time, it was pretty darn good. Full of awesomesauce, as some would say.
I found myself mourning Heath Ledger during the movie, which I don't know if everyone experienced, but it added a sad tinge to things for me. I have long had an especial soft spot for his Role in 10 Things I Hate About You, and not merely from this particular performance:
We are worse off for missing all the other projects he might have done.
